UNDER 231, Lakers/Hawks: This is a weird one because all signs point to a shootout. The Hawks have been scoring a ton and failing to defend. The Lakers move to small-ball has opened things up for better looks. But I’m going to go ahead and fade that philosophy because I see this game playing out a bit differently. The Lakers, I hope, have studied enough tape to know Trae isn’t someone you can stop with simple PnR defenses. That said, in small-ball lineups, the Lakers can switch other guys onto Trae that aren’t lumbering bigs. I don’t mean that that is somehow going to stop him from getting his, but if it creates more isolation ball, that decreases the number of possessions. A pick that leads directly to a shot is a very quick play, or even a couple passes into a shot. The slower iteration is a pick leading to a switch, the offensive player clearing out and then going 1-on-1 against a mismatch. Meanwhile, on the Lakers side, they’ll be contending against a team with actual rim protection, so some of those layups the Lakers count on (since half the team can’t shoot a lick) will be a little tougher. Remove a few layups, slow down the game just a hair, and we get one finishing in the 225 range.
