Fantasy Basketball Draft Guide 2026: Yahoo Points Leagues Ranks

By André Lemos Published September 14, 2026 Updated September 21, 2026 2 min read

Points leagues are like walking into a carnival game with the targets standing still. You can clean up if you know what you’re doing, mostly because these leagues often attract managers who are either new to fantasy basketball or chasing the breezy, once-a-week rhythm of fantasy football. There are a few wrinkles, some leagues throw in penalties for bricked free throws or missed field goals, others hand out points for just about anything: double-doubles, triple-doubles, technicals, maybe even the occasional ejection if your commissioner’s feeling spicy.

But most of the time, points leagues strip the percentages out of the equation. And that’s where the sharks feast. If you’ve got real projections, not just rankings lifted from a 9-cat cheat sheet, you can absolutely steamroll. A lot of managers walk into these drafts armed with standard-league ADPs, blissfully unaware that the math underneath their strategy just changed. Bring Bruski 150 projections into that room and you’re basically holding the answers to the test.

Yahoo POINTS LEAGUES

Points: 1
Rebounds: 1.2
Assists: 1.5
Steals: 3
Blocks: 3
Turnovers: -1

The standard H2H Yahoo Points settings do not include any punishments for efficiency. This is the type of points leagues that many are familiar with, as these settings typically apply to many DFS systems as well (but you should always double-check that). Notice that assists carry a lot of weight, and the punishment for a turnover is not equal. With the combination of no efficiency hits and the value of an assist outweighing the punishment for a turnover, offensive engines are being highly rewarded. Players who excel at points and assists will get a bit of a boost. However, being more efficient at providing those points and assists doesn’t mean much.

Guards, obviously, eat. But if you can find forwards or centers who dish, think Alperen Sengun, you’re playing 3D chess while everyone else is still sorting their depth charts. The reward for rebounds also isn’t too shabby, even if it can’t quite compare to the value you can gain from high-volume scorers and playmakers. It is the next-best stat to produce fantasy points after points and assists.

And with steals and blocks both capped at three points apiece, the system quietly tilts the board toward offense. High steals and blocks might be complementary, but they aren’t tilting the board as much as other stats. It’s less about hunting defense and more about volume, efficiency be damned. In other words: if you’re still drafting like it’s a 9-cat league, you’re already behind.

From the cliffs of Porto Moniz to the forests of Latvia. With a degree in business and a background in finance, I traded balance sheets for projection models, following a lifelong love of the game. I’ve played it, I’ve lived it and I’ve had the privilege of working inside team front offices at both the club and national level.

For over 20 years, I’ve also been immersed in the world of Fantasy Basketball, studying trends, finding edges and living the grind season after season. That passion has brought me here, to SportsEthos, where I’m honored to be part of our management team alongside the great Aaron Bruski. My mission is simple: help SportsEthos thrive as the premier home for Fantasy Sports and sports coverage. A place where users get real value and where every member of the team can sharpen their craft, find joy in the work and build something special that feels like home.
