Fantasy Basketball Draft Guide 2026: Face-off, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander vs. Luka Dončić

By SportsEthos Staff Published October 10, 2026 6 min read

Our Fantasy Face-Off series will feature two SportsEthos staffers making their arguments in a head-to-head battle of comparable fantasy players.

Another potential stalemate near the top of draft boards is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander vs. Luka Dončić. While there probably isn’t a wrong answer, it is a genuine clash of philosophies in terms of drafting style and your priorities when building a fantasy team.

Mike pens the slithery poetry of SGA, while Kes articulates the enticing prose of Dončić.

Gilgeous-Alexander is a reigning two-time MVP who has been an inner-circle elite fantasy player ever since the Thunder got good. He may lack the slate-breaking sizzle of other options but anyone who has rostered him can attest to his brilliance, and four years of 30-plus points per game is nothing to sneeze at. Gilgeous-Alexander is also one of the very best percentage players in the game while also providing standout production on defense. Last season he eclipsed Wilt Chamberlain’s record for consecutive games of 20-plus points and was automatic in both fantasy and reality, powering teams with a ridiculous 31.1 points per game while boosting field goal percentage and free throw percentage along the way, a rare combination. You might not enjoy watching him play with the way he can sell contact for free throws, but you can’t argue that Gilgeous-Alexander has been near the top of the mountain for four years running. He finished third in per-game value and was second in total value.

Dončić was a star as soon as he entered the NBA and quickly ascended to MVP levels by his second season. His standing as a fantasy player has continued to grow since, and when he truly gets going, the peaks feel unstoppable; his 37.5 PPG for 600 total points in March can attest to that. Dončić is a two-time scoring champ — 33.9 PPG in 2023-24 and 33.5 PPG in 2025-26 — while also perennially being near the top of the charts in assists per game (8.3 APG in 2025-26 ranked fourth) and threes per game (4.0 3PG in 2025-26 ranked second). While his 7.8 RPG in 2025-26 were a positive, note that his career-high RPG were 9.4 in 2019-20 and his career-best APG were 9.8 in 2023-24, so he can do more. With three categories that Dončić could be a podium finisher in (points, threes, assists), one category that he could lead his specific position of PG-SG in (rebounds) and positive steals to boot, this is essentially a mathematical equation about the give-and-take of fantasy since he cannot match Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s efficiency. Last season, Dončić finished No. 4/6 per game (8-cat/9-cat) and No. 7/10 (8-cat/9-cat) on totals, but you could argue that his impact goes beyond the “fantasy basketball box score” if you focus on his strengths.

The Case for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

This is largely a matter of personal preference and you can’t really go wrong, but in the big picture it is a discussion of floor vs. ceiling. Gilgeous-Alexander’s consistent excellence can be taken for granted, and the fact that he just comes out and drops 30 a night while the Thunder decimate teams has made him, dare we say… a little boring. Well, that’s good for us.

Doncic is capable of ripping the entire league to shreds, as he did last March when he averaged 37.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 7.4 assists, 2.3 steals and 5.0 triples per game on .492 shooting — again, that’s for a whole month. He’s going to have the edge when it comes to rebounds, assists and 3-pointers. That is inarguable and there’s real temptation to believe that he could put up some truly goofy numbers with LeBron James off the roster and the supporting cast being tailored to his needs. That could end up happening and it wouldn’t be shocking if it did.

However, if it doesn’t, it’s hard to get past the immense edges Gilgeous-Alexander provides in more subtle fashion. He was the only guard in the league last season to provide a boost to FG%, and he did that on insane volume. The scoring will be in the same ballpark as Doncic and while SGA can’t compete in boards, dimes and treys, he will give you more blocks, fewer turnovers, a shot at more steals and, most importantly, a gargantuan leg up in the shooting percentages. While few single players match Doncic’s upside in the counting stats, you can at least continue to build up those categories in the aggregate. Doncic is an excellent player but his best categories are purely additive. There is not another guard in the league who is in Gilgeous-Alexander’s stratosphere in terms of efficiency — every single player you add to your roster will be a less-effective player in either FG% or FT%, if not both.

Which player you prefer largely comes down to team-building philosophy but it’s going to be easier for you to draft other players to build up rebounds, assists and 3-pointers than it is to add FG% and FT% boosters. Starting your draft with Gilgeous-Alexander gives you a massive advantage that many people don’t properly acknowledge because it’s hard to weigh the impact of his FG% and FT% until you sit down and do the math. We have done the math. That leg up, plus Gilgeous-Alexander’s more-than-respectable output across the rest of the box score, gives you plenty of options to work with as you move to the second round and beyond. You can take a low-FG%, high-assist guard in the second or third round and likely still come out ahead in shooting percentage and TOs, only looking a little light in blocks and boards. You can take a high-FG% shot-blocking big and suddenly find yourself only trailing ground in assists and triples while dominating FG% all year with a point-turnover ratio that’s hard to compete with. He’s a powerful force multiplier for any roster and completely changes the complexion of the two most difficult categories to manage.

The other big point in SGA’s favor is simple consistency. His per-game 8/9-cat finishes over the last four seasons: 3/3, 3/2, 4/2 and 3/3. Doncic in that same span: 4/6, 4/7, 3/5, 10/16. It’s close but Gilgeous-Alexander’s stat set puts him ahead, and that has borne out in the rankings. Doncic is the flash and dash (and plenty of substance too, don’t get it twisted) but Gilgeous-Alexander is steady on the rudder and always at the top of the heap.

The Case for Luka Dončić

As Mike said, I do not think there is a “correct” choice here, but it is a matter of personal preferences. My argument for Dončić is a bit more than the floor vs. ceiling mentioned above, however. Yes, Dončić has the potential to be the pinnacle of raw counting stats, as the 37.5 PPG he averaged while scoring 600 points in March suggests, but his overall usage is so tremendous that the baseline counting stats will always be elite, even when the percentages slip. Dončić led the NBA with a 38.3% usage rate last season, but with LeBron James gone, we might see that push closer to 40.0% or beyond. I am mainly discussing the scoring so far, but there is more to examine in his stat line.

The No. 3 pick is an apparent clash of philosophies. Mr. Consistent, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Mike’s corner) vs. the Volume Monster, Luka Dončić (Keston’s corner).
