How’d We Get Here?
The Nets slogged through another lost season and continued to search for long-term answers in the wake of their failed Kyrie Irving-Kevin Durant era. With a whopping five first-round picks to integrate last year, the Nets were a bit of a revolving door and we ended up with glimpses of upside but no concrete fixes to their problems. This summer saw the team send Nic Claxton to Chicago while bringing Julius Randle back from Minnesota; they also signed Keon Ellis and Moritz Wagner to help round out a roster that was otherwise mostly comprised of first- or second-year players. The Nets added the dynamic Mikel Brown Jr. with the sixth pick in the draft to give them some real upside in comparison to last year’s rookie class, later selecting Joshua Jefferson and Tyler Bilodeau to round out the new crop of recruits. Brooklyn signed coach Jordi Fernandez to a contract extension as well, cementing him as the voice of this rebuild project and the man tasked with developing all of these young players into legitimate contributors. The Nets are one of the few teams in the Eastern Conference without any playoff expectations and we would expect their rotation to reflect that, though the changing lottery odds system means that things won’t get quite so silly this year.
