A Third Prospect has Hit The Mets Rotation

  • It’s not often than an organization holds three of the top pitching prospects in baseball, but through a combination of excellent drafting and development, the New York Mets find themselves in this exciting situation. Two months of lackluster starting pitching at the major league level added some impetus to promote their three exciting young right handers, starting with Nolan McLean three weeks ago, continuing with Jonah Tong last weekend, and now finishing with Brandon Sproat on Sunday afternoon against the Reds. Four outstanding starts against excellent opposition have seen McLean set a flurry of records, and Tong’s major league debut added some excitement for what’s to come from him in the near future.

Since his return from injury, Kodai Senga hasn’t been the ace that Mets fans have become accustomed to watching, with his once league leading ERA now more than doubled in the last month. As other starters struggle, the team decided to skip Senga’s turn in the rotation as they negotiate the details of a potential trip to the minor leagues, leaving a vacancy for Brandon Sproat to make his major league debut on Sunday in Cincinnati. The circumstances of this opportunity should provide a runway of two or three starts at least, and the range of outcomes for those starts is wider than either of the two other prospects to be called up so far.

Sproat has developed a six pitch mix, combining the use of two fastballs as his primary offering. Both the sinker and four seamer sit in the upper 90s, with the four seamer touching triple digits, which is his heater preference against left-handed hitters. Righties see more of the sinker, which doesn’t miss as many bats, but does induce weak contact, and some chase inside. He’s been throwing the four seamer for longer, but the shape isn’t great, thus the need for the sinker, and he prefers to pitch with his fastballs earlier in counts to speed up opposing bats.
