As an avid enjoyer of dominant starting pitching, prime Justin Verlander provided a dimension we haven’t seen in recent decades, mowing down hitters deep into games, with no regard for pitch count. His fastball was electric, and his disgusting array of offspeed pitches had hitters flailing hopelessly, but the most unique part of his game was the pattern of his fastball velocity. Verlander would sit in the mid 90s for most of the game, and then as his outing neared its end, he’d empty the tank throwing as hard as he could, consistently hitting triple digits to simply overpower hitters.
Those who watched Jacob Misiorowski’s performance yesterday will understand exactly where I’m going with this; but saving the best fastballs for last is really where the comparison ends. For those who missed it, Misiorowski, one of baseballs top pitching prospects, and the Milwaukee Brewers’ best, pitched against Triple-A Memphis yesterday afternoon, tossing seven innings of one run ball. After cruising at 97-98 for most of the game, Misiorowski allowed a couple of base runners in the sixth, facing Memphis cleanup hitter Luken Baker with two outs and the go-ahead runs on second and third.
