How’d We Get Here?
The Warriors looked like a tough out in a competitive Western Conference. The Steph Curry-Jimmy Butler duo was working a little magic and the Warriors were also getting good secondary contributions from their younger players. They decided to bet on talent again by acquiring Kristaps Porzingis at the deadline but injuries ended up derailing the season. Porzingis battled Achilles tendinopathy and chronic illness, delaying his Golden State debut and limiting his impact even when he was in uniform. Butler tore his ACL and will miss a big portion of this upcoming season. Curry dealt with a prolonged bout of runner’s knee, taking the Warriors to the fringe of the Play-In. Even Moses Moody suffered a patellar tendon rupture late in the year. Curry and Green delivered a throwback effort in the first Play-In game but the Warriors couldn’t survive two do-or-die contests. They hit the summer hoping to make a big splash, making a play for LeBron James (and maybe Anthony Davis too, depending on who you believe) but came up empty. With their attention focused on the very top of the market and minimal ways to add mid-tier salaries, the Warriors were left to re-sign their depth cast and add Yaxel Lendeborg with their first-round pick. Aside from Lendeborg and No. 54 selection Lajae Jones, it’s the same team as last year minus two starting wings, a rotation center and a backup point guard plus the fact that everyone is a year older. It’s a bold strategy, though you know the Warriors will continue to explore all options to make a contender around Curry before he rides off into the sunset.
