How’d We Get Here?
The Pistons were the talk of the town last year, emerging as the top team in the Eastern Conference during the regular season. Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren looked like the next big star duo and the Pistons were riding high into the playoffs with plenty of Detroit Basketball swagger. It all came crashing down after a near disaster in a seven-game victory over the Magic in the first round, aided by an injury to Franz Wagner in a series that saw both teams look inept on offense for significant periods of time. The Pistons could not find more answers in the second round, falling to a Cavs team that escaped a seven-game first round of their own. Duren disappeared in the playoffs, Cunningham could not weave his way through outsized defensive attention and the Pistons had nobody else besides Tobias Harris who could get a shot up. The Pistons entered the offseason in need of shooting and shot creation in order to keep this train on the tracks. They traded for Isaiah Joe and Taurean Prince to help with the shooting while replacing Harris with John Collins up front. Team culture cornerstone Isaiah Stewart was traded to Memphis and while the Pistons were unable to add a proven ball-handler, taking Ebuka Okorie with the 17th pick in the draft helps a lot. If Okorie can contribute in the same way that Daniss Jenkins and Paul Reed did last year, the Pistons might have something, but for now they still have some big questions to answer about their ability to go from good to great.
