Working the Waiver Wire: September 15th

  • It’s still playoff time, and successfully working the wire is as important now as ever. So today, I’m recommending a previously-mentioned, priority add from the Nationals, a couple of bats who have been starring recently for a hot Rangers club and a veteran reliever who, due to injury, currently finds himself in the closer role for the Cubs.

So, without further ado, let’s get after it!

    Daylen Lile – OF – WSH – 40% Yahoo

Lile has already been mentioned in the past couple Working the Waiver Wire articles, but as I feel that he is a priority add, particularly in 12-team leagues, I am recommending him again today. His roster percentage needs to be at least 50% at this point. So, let’s get on that, people. Seriously.

Since I personally highlighted him a week ago, the young outfielder has continued to impress, slashing .346/.452/.577 with five runs scored, a home run, a double and a triple in 31 plate appearances over those seven games. During that time frame, Lile has a 19.4% strikeout rate, slightly up from his season mark of 16.3%, but his walk rate is also up, from 6.2% on the season, to 16.1% over the past week. He’s running a high BABIP of .421 during this stretch, but that can be at least partially attributed to the outfielder’s speed. While, his .231 ISO and 187 wRC+ over the past week stand out, too.

If the youngster can provide similar production this week, it would certainly help managers who remain in the thick of things in their fantasy playoffs. The 22-year-old is a must-add in 12-teamers. I even added him recently in my 10-teamer, so go get him!

    Jake Burger – 1B,3B – TEX – 38% Yahoo

Can I interest anyone in a smash Burger? The Rangers corner infielder has been serving them up this month, going deep four times in ten September games. During that time frame, the slugger has a .297/.333/.676 slash line with the four homers, a triple, six runs scored and eight RBI in 39 plate appearances.

Admittedly, Burger’s performance this season has been a disappointment for the Rangers and for fantasy managers. Although, with the exception of a decreased OBP (.282 this year, down from the .305 he averaged over the previous two years), he has pretty much been the same player he has always been. This year, however, he just so happens to play for a club that is actually trying to win games, so when one of his patented prolonged slumps hit, earlier this Summer, Burger was sent down to Triple-A for several games to straighten himself out. The 29-year-old has also dealt with some injuries this year, causing him to miss additional time.

After averaging 31.5 home runs in an average of 559.5 plate appearances over the previous two seasons, Burger only has 348 plate appearances so far this season, accumulating just 16 homers. Due to the decrease in major-league plate appearances, he will probably be lucky to finish with 20 dingers in 2025, but the slugger is still a good bet to hit a few more over his remaining PAs, so managers should go pick him up, especially if their squads need a power boost.
