Working the Waiver Wire: June 23rd

  • To shake things up a bit, we’re going to forego the hit records today and instead discuss the B-sides, deep cuts only, focusing on a trio of guys whose additions to fantasy squads would be best suited for deeper leagues. First, we are going to talk some Schmitt, then we’ll decide Didier Fuentes or did my Fuentes make his major league debut last week. Finally, we shall Grant a fantasy wish, introducing a great speculative saves option, in Taylor. So, in words inspired by the great rap duo, Outkast: as we go deeper than the page of a book, let’s take a look!

    Casey Schmitt – INF – SFG – 8% Yahoo

Schmitt is enjoying a solid 2025 campaign so far, slashing .286/.369/.462 in 104 plate appearances. He has been filling in recently at third base for Matt Chapman, who is currently on the 10-day injured list with a right hand injury. As a fill-in, Schmitt finds himself in the midst of a hot streak, going 17-for-41 (.415) with a double, four home runs, nine runs scored and 12 RBI in his last 12 games, hitting safely in all but two of those contests. Taking a look beneath the hood, his 25% strike out rate (K%) is not great but he has improved his walk rate (BB%) from 3.5% last year, to 9.6% this year, which bodes well for the sustainability of his career high .369 on-base percentage (.366 wOBA). The 26-year-old has a career high 46.8% hard hit percentage (HardHit%), as well. Deep league fantasy managers should pick up the infielder to ride out the hot streak, at the very least, and perhaps Schmitt can hit enough to take away at bats from the struggling Tyler Fitzgerald at second base once Matt Chapman returns to take over at third.
