Working the Waiver Wire: July 28th

  • In today’s addition of Working the Waiver Wire, we’ll be taking a look at a starting pitcher who, at this point, should be rostered in all leagues, as well as a slugger whose power is aging like a fine wine. Plus, we’ve got a surging deep-league add, and for those in super-deep formats, we’ve got an outfielder who is shamefully unrostered in Yahoo leagues. So, let’s get after it!

    Eric Lauer – SP,RP – TOR – 56% Yahoo

Lauer rhymes with Bauer, which is apropos because, much like Agent Jack Bauer from the classic television show 24, the man cannot be stopped. This is my second week in a row recommending the former Kia Tigers great, but perhaps after Lauer’s latest gem this past Friday in which he allowed just one run on five hits and no walks over 8.0 innings pitched with six strikeouts in a win against the Tigers, his roster percentage will finally creep above the 60% mark. For the season, the 30-year-old now holds a 6-2 record with an impressive 2.61 ERA and 0.93 WHIP, producing 71 strikeouts in 69 innings pitched.

Under the hood, Lauer’s 2.90 xERA, .262 wOBA, 3.32 FIP and 3.49 SIERA all support his earned run average. In addition, his 26.4% strikeout rate and 20.4% strikeout minus walk rate are solid, and he’s managed to limit the free passes with a 5.9% walk rate. The lefty is clearly in a groove right now, and if he’s somehow still available in your league, stop reading this right now and go pick him up (but afterward, make sure you come back and read the rest of the article).
