Working the Waiver Wire: July 21st

  • For today’s article, we’ll be focusing on some adds for 12-team leagues. First, we will discuss two breakout arms in Quinn Priester and Eric Lauer. Then we will chat about a couple of under-the-radar bats in veteran outfielder Austin Hays and young infielder Caleb Durbin. Got it? Good. Now, let’s do it!

    Quinn Priester – SP,RP – MIL – 48% Yahoo

Priester tossed six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits, while striking out 10 batters and walking none in a win on Friday against the Dodgers. Los Angeles’ offense has been struggling lately, but it was still an impressive outing for the youngster. On the season, Priester has an outstanding 8-2 record with a 3.33 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 94.2 innings pitched. The 24-year-old hurler is not usually such a big whiff-inducer. His strikeout rate is a middling 20.4% this year, but he does boast an excellent 57.3 ground ball rate. Over his last four starts, however, he has reached double-digit strikeouts twice, as he registered 11 K’s in a June 28 start against the Rockies, perhaps signifying the beginning of a trend.

In addition, Priester’s 3.54 xERA, 3.96 FIP (3.64 xFIP) and 3.80 SIERA point to the legitimacy of his earned run average. Simply put, at this juncture it is rather surprising that the young righty is not more universally rostered, and if he is still available in your league, make sure to rectify that.
