In today’s article, our recommendations include a hot rookie bat and a trio of winners from the recent trade deadline. These adds are primarily intended for managers in fantasy leagues of 12 teams or higher. So, let’s get it!
Warming Bernabel – 1B,3B – COL – 38% Yahoo
Bernabel, proving his first name to be no misnomer, has begun his MLB career on fire, slashing an incredible .438/.455/.906 in the eight games since he was called up, adding three home runs, four doubles, a triple, six runs scored and eight RBI in 33 plate appearances. Until Sunday, where he went 0-for-4 against the Pirates, the 23-year-old had hit safely in his first seven games, posting multi-hit efforts in four of those seven contests.
Under the hood, as one might expect with this kind of hot streak, Bernabel is running a high BABIP, in this instance, .440, but the good news is that he has a .317 xBA, so even without the good fortune, he would still likely be hitting for average. He doesn’t walk much, with only a 7.3% walk rate in Triple-A, and a minuscule 3.0% walk rate so far in the majors, but he does have a 72.9% zone swing rate and a 9.5% swinging strike rate. Additional indicators of future success are the youngster’s solid 12.1% strikeout rate and 17.6% whiff rate.
Obviously, the rookie’s ridiculously hot start is unsustainable, but with the Rockies having very little to play for these days, it is reasonable to assume that the young infielder will see plenty of playing time during the remainder of the season. Managers in 12-team leagues should pick him up and continue to roll him out there, at least while he’s hot.
