Working the Waiver Wire: April 21st

As baseball enters its fifth week of play, there a few players to look at who have put together a solid start to the season. Today we look at a pair of American League hitters and National League pitchers who could bolster your fantasy rosters.

Byron Buxton – Minn – OF – 44% rostered (Yahoo)

The oft-injured Buxton has been healthy so far and is producing for the Twins. Playing in 20 of the 22 games so far, he is hitting .244 with four home runs, 17 runs, 10 RBIs and five stolen bases. Knowing Buxton is running is a good sign, the five steals are just two short of the seven he had in 2024, playing in 102 games. The Twins have said they are going to give him periodic days off to try to keep the 31-year-old outfielder healthy for a full season.

The underlying numbers for Buxton are a mixed bag. His walk rate of 2.4% is the lowest of his career outside of the covid year of 2020, while his strikeout rate is 31.3%. He is hitting the ball harder in 2025 and should result in a higher batting average. His 16%-barrel rate and 56% hard-hit rate are well above league averages of 8.6% and 40.8%, respectively. Buxton has shown what a talent he is in small sample sizes due to his injury history, but while healthy, he should be rostered in 12-team leagues or larger.
