The four starting pitchers that comprise this weekend‘s streamers offer a higher standard than you’ll normally find for end of matchup streams, which is especially valuable because of the longer matchups in points leagues, providing that higher start limit to take advantage of.
Friday
Gavin Williams – SP – CLE @ KCR – 49% rostered (Yahoo)
Williams has the better stuff profile between him and Nelson, but his matchup against the Royals is marginally tougher than that against the Pirates. He’s still missing a ton of bats, he’s still walking way too many hitters, and he’s still been plagued with the inconsistency that’s somewhat prevented him from making the next step, but his numbers are unquestionably solid over his already career high innings total of 104.1. I’d prefer Williams over Nelson, and I’d be comfortable streaming him everywhere, but I don’t think Nelson is all too far behind given the lack of quality in both offenses.
Ryne Nelson – SP – ARI @ PIT – 41% rostered (Yahoo)
I’ve long been skeptical of Nelson‘s ability to excel with his profile, but he’s gone a long way to proving me wrong as of late, holding a 2.83 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP over the past month. He’s done it by increasing fastball usage at the top of the zone, which has always been his best pitch, and saving the soft stuff for later in counts forces hitters to get started early. Even with the success he’s had, he still should be thought of as a high risk streamer because of his propensity to be bitten by the long ball, but the Pirates are far from a powerful lineup, so the risk in this start is far lower than it would otherwise be. I’d happily take Nelson in 12 team leagues, and debatably smaller ones as well, although that home run risk still does linger in the back of my mind.
