Pickups of the Day for September 23rd

  • Well, this is it, the final Monday Pickups of the Day. Whether you are competing in the final week of your rotisserie league or in the title round of your head to head or points leagues, there is still value to be found on the free agency pile. I took a look around and found a handful of names who can help out, including a starting pitcher on a scoreless streak, a power-speed demon in the form of a Yankees rookie outfielder and four relievers who are currently closing for their respective teams, that did not start the year out in the position. Don’t let your season fizzle out, go out with a bang and scoop up whoever can help you put on that title belt at the end of the season!

    Zack Littell – SP – TBR – 26%, Yahoo

If I am going to recommend a pitcher for my last pickups of the day, then that means I want to recommend a pitcher who has one last good to great start left – and Littell does. He is set to face the Tigers in Detroit on Wednesday. He will enter the game on an 18 inning scoreless streak, holing the Red Sox, Guardians and Orioles scoreless over his last three starts. He struck out 16 and walked only one batter over those three games.

In fact, over Littell’s last eight starts (going back to July 27th, he missed two weeks in August), he has only allowed seven earned runs (10 runs total, but three were due to an error). He pitched 44.2 innings over those starts, striking out 34, walking 10 and allowing just four home runs. His statcast numbers were really great too, with just a 7.2% barrel rate and a 31.2% hard-hit rate, so he has been limiting the quality of contact, resulting in weaker hit balls. He is a bit of a fly-ball pitcher, but by limiting the quality of contact and keeping exit velocities low, he’s been able to maintain a low home run rate (just 7% HR/FB) and limit the damage done against him.

Littell has proven himself to be a solid #3 or #4 fantasy starter, someone who may not strike out a ton of batters, but will limit walks and home runs and maintain decent ratios. Pick him up everywhere you need pitching help, be it in a roto league or championship week in your head-to-head league.

League Size Recommendation: 12 team or deeper leagues
