Francisco Alvarez – NYM – C – 32% ESPN

It’s no secret that Alvarez hasn’t enjoyed the best of seasons, enduring a surgery-requiring thumb injury costing him almost two months, and struggling with offensive consistency that saw him post a .450 OPS in August. His September at bats have improved drastically, and the results are beginning to follow, with three home runs in the last week pairing with a .789 OPS for the month so far.

Alvarez has the potential to go on an unholy tear for the remainder of the season, evidenced by his 1.123 OPS in June, and having two full months with an OPS above .970 last season. The stark improvement in barrel rate is enough to recommend a speculative pickup in all formats, but regression in his recently improved peripherals would relegate him to a 14 team catcher in redraft.
