The big league trade deadline is this week and, in many fantasy leagues, is coming up in the next week or two as well. But, if you can’t find yourself a willing trade partner, I am here to tell you that the waiver wire is always willing to trade it’s value for your failing players. So let’s take a look into that wonderful sea of available players and see if we can find a few that can help you along the way.
Jeff McNeil – 2B, OF – NYM – 50%, Yahoo
In standard 5×5 Yahoo leagues, McNeil has been the fifth best second baseman eligible batter over the past month. And he should have probably been even better than that, just based on the disparity between his wOBA (0.372) and his actual on-base percentage (0.307) and his low BABIP (0.266, though he does have a 0.280 batting average over the 30 days, so he is making a bit of his own luck). He’s been doing most of his damage out of the eighth spot in the batting order, but was recently moved into the middle third, batting fifth or sixth in his most recent five games. Though McNeil may not be a source of power or speed, he should hit a handful or so of home runs from here on out and chip in a few stolen bases, to go with a 0.270 or better batting average. You could do a lot worse filling in for the injured Ozzie Albies or maybe starting in lieu of some struggling players like Nico Hoerner or Andres Gimenez. He may not be the best 2B the rest of the season, but I can see a path to him performing as a top 10 2B the rest of the season and providing plenty of relief and production for those managers who have struggled at the position.
League Size Recommendation: 12 team and deeper leagues
