Pickups of the Day for August 2nd

  • It’s Friday, which means it’s finally a chance for us to catch our collective breaths – both from the week and also the flurry of roster activity that came as a result of Tuesday’s trade deadline. Now that the dust has settled, it’s time to sort through the chaos and find ourselves some upside plays for the remainder of the season!

    Coby Mayo – 1B/3B – BAL – 18% Yahoo, 0% CBS

    During a trade deadline that had little in the way of star-power being swapped, it is perhaps the opening of playing time for top prospects that is the most impactful. But while Mayo is most definitely a top prospect, it was injuries to Jorge Mateo and, more recently, Jordan Westburg that lead to Mayo getting the call to the big leagues on Thursday night.

    It’s certainly a well-earned promotion, as Mayo has hit an excellent .294/.370/.581 with 20 home runs and a 139 wRC+ over 76 games at Triple-A this season, all at just 22-years-old. The prospect rankings and scouting reports largely believe in Mayo’s long-term abilities, with FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen ranking him at 12th overall on his most recent update, writing;

    Mayo’s swing is weird and he’s a flawed defender who still hasn’t begun playing the position we think he might best be suited for, but he now has a five-year track record of mashing and is one of the higher-probability corner position prospects in the minors.

    The overall breakdown of Mayo’s tools per Longenhagen is below and I want to draw your eyes specifically to the 70/70 grade in Raw Power.

    For those unfamiliar, the first number is the current skill level for the player, whereas the second number is their expected skill level in the future. As noted, Mayo currently holds a 70-grade in Raw Power, meaning he’s already at the height of his powers in that one particular category. As noted in the column right beside it though, he may not yet be able to get to in game action, but even a 55 in Game Power is still above average.

    Now that Mayo is set to make his debut, I think it’s entirely possible he actually outperforms his former Triple-A Norfolk teammate, Jackson Holliday, the remainder of the season in redraft leagues. In keeper or dynasty leagues? Make sure he’s owned – and if not, scoop him up immediately.

    League size recommendation: 12-team leagues
