Pickups of the Day for August 31st

  • We are entering the playoffs (or already have) in head-to-head leagues while roto leagues are gearing up for a final push. Things may look bleak on the waiver wire but there are still some solid assets that can be gotten off the wire right now that can be a nice boost to plenty of rosters.

    Jacob Young – OF – WSN – 16% Yahoo, 43% Fantrax

In his last ten games he is batting .353 with a .918 OPS with three steals, one homer, five RBI and five runs scored.

He now has 31 steals and 68 runs scored to go with a .258 batting average. He has an xBA of .267 and and elite squared up rate at 29.9%, an elite whiff rate of 19.0% and a solid K rate at 19.6%.

Yeah, nothing else is good as he is just a batting average asset that gets a ton of steals. Those of you who read me regularly know this about me. I am a big fan of safe bats on the bench.

Any time a regular gets rest or has a random injury that keeps them out for a few games, it is nice to have someone like Young who won’t really hurt you (except maybe in OBP leagues) as his xBA suggests he won’t give many 0-for-nadas and he is a legit boost in steals.

Oh, and the young Nats offense is starting to heat up and that improving team context will only serve to help him score more runs. Batting at the bottom of this lineup gives him the chance to get a single in the nine-hole and steal second with hot rookies Dylan Crews and James Wood coming up right behind him.
