DJ Herz, a rookie left-hander with the Washington Nationals, is showing notable potential, particularly for fantasy managers in need of strikeouts. Despite some concerns about his overall command and the quality of his stuff, Herz has been piling up strikeouts, with at least six Ks in three of his last five starts since August 3. During this period, he has posted a commendable 2.22 ERA and 1.19 WHIP across 24 1/3 innings, totaling a 30/12 K/BB ratio.

The increase in Herz’s effectiveness can be linked to his enhanced use of the changeup, especially against right-handers. Although he doesn’t typically pitch deep into games, Herz has managed to record double-digit strikeouts in multiple outings since making his major league debut in June. His ability to strike out batters at a high rate makes him a viable option, particularly in deeper mixed leagues.

With favorable matchups against the Cubs, Pirates, and Marlins on the horizon, Herz’s value could see a significant boost given these teams’ recent struggles. While he may not reach the upper echelon of pitchers without improved command, Herz’s strikeout upside and upcoming schedule make him a promising pick-up for fantasy managers looking to bolster their pitching staff.
