September 10, 2024, 7:36 amIf you are still reading this article it means you are likey still competing in your MLB fantasy season. With three weeks left in the season, or less in points leagues, the waiver wire is very thin. At this point in the season you should be looking at what categories you can make marginal gains in, like a few steals, wins or saves. So let’s take a look at a few under the radar players the rest of your league is likely sleeping on.
Jonny DeLuca – OF – TB – 9% Yahoo, 26% FanTrax, 10% CBS
DeLuca was acquired along with Ryan Pepiot in the trade that sent Tyler Glasnow to the Los Angeles Dodgers last December. Since the start of August he is finally getting a chance at regular playing time in Tampa, starting twenty-nine of the last thirty-six games, and nine of the last ten games, while playing all three outfield positions. DeLuca has batted third in the lineup the last two games so the Rays appear to be giving him a regular spot in the middle of their lineup to see what he can do in advance of the 2025 season. While struggling to find regular at bats earlier in the year, DeLuca has a .214/.278/.344 slash line on the season. However, prior to Monday night, over the last fourteen games and 50 at bats, he has hit .380, with eleven runs, three home runs, sevens RBIs and three stolen bases. Extrapolate that over a full season of 600 at bats and it is a 36 HR, 132 Runs, 84 RBIs and 36 steals pace. I recognize that you can’t project players using that simple math, but DeLuca is locked into regular playing time in Tampa and has been producing over the past five weeks, in all five offensive categories. He also has 98th percentile sprint speed, so at a point in the season where steals are hard to find on the waiver wire, Jonny D. may be your guy.
