We are in the thick of the fantasy playoffs in most leagues, and whether you’re battling to advance to the next round or looking for key waiver adds as you enjoy your bye week, here are three players who could be difference makers when you need it most:
Spencer Torkelson – 1B – DET – 34% Yahoo, 74% Fantrax
Spencer Torkelson is showing signs of a significant turnaround after a challenging season. Recently back from Triple-A, Torkelson had an exceptional performance Tuesday, going 4-for-4 with three singles and a double. Impressively, each of his batted balls registered an expected batting average over .900. Torkelson has now recorded multiple hits in two of his first three games since his return, hinting at a return to form reminiscent of last season’s second half when he hit 19 homers. While Torkelson’s time in Triple-A this season wasn’t dominant—posting a .239/.356/.442 slash line with 11 home runs over 58 games—his recent performance suggests he may be finding his rhythm at the plate. However, managers should be aware of his high 31% strikeout rate during his time in the minors this year, which indicates that some contact and approach issues remain.
Despite these concerns, Torkelson’s evident power potential makes him a valuable pickup, in leagues of 12 teams or more. He presents more upside almost any other hitter currently readily available as evidenced by being still 74% owned on Fantrax, which is historically known for it’s emphasis on keeper and dynasty leagues.
