While it is still too early to really make any drastic changes to your roster, picking up cheap flyers to improve the edges of your roster is what you need to be doing. Finding cheap replacements/streams for injured dudes is also critical.
Whatever you need, I have plenty of FAAB recommendations for most any situation a manager may find themselves in.
12-TEAM LEAGUES (FANTRAX ROSTER%)
Honorable mentions – These are dudes between 50-60% that might be available or have had their % increase due to daily change leagues so they may still be available for you FAAB runs.
P – CHW – Noah Schultz (64%) – Yeah, yeah, Over 60%. But he has been in the minors and very well could be available in your league. He has a great slider and stand 6’10” from the left hand side. He opens his career vs. the Rays and has loads of potential. With a 40% K% and, more importantly, a 4.2% BB% so far in Triple-A, he is ready. BID – 10-15%.
1B – MIN – Josh Bell (60%) – if you followed the Williamson 300, he was a draft target for you. And with three homers in his first 55 PA with a .289/.400/.578 slash powered by a 51.6% hard-hit rate, he is making me look smart. BID – 3-6%
1B – COL – TJ Rumfield (60%) – He has gotten run and has made the most of it. He is slashing .319/.377/.511 with a couple homers in 53 PA. He has a 10.8% barrel rate and calls Coors home. BID – 2-3%
OF – DET – Max Clark (61%) – OK, I cheated a little bit with a 61% rostered dude. But he might get thrust in the bigs with the nasty injury to Parker Meadows. Wenceel Perez got the call up and some combo of he, Matt Vierling and Jovy Baez are the option in Detroit. Clark is a top prospect destroying Triple-A pitching right now. Get him now as this might be the cheapest you can get him. BID – 10-15%
P – TOR – Max Scherzer (60%) – This is a stream against a D’Backs squad struggling early on with an 83 wRC+. BID – 1-3%
2B, 3B – Nolan Gorman (59%) – The hit tool still hurts but he is lifting and pulling the ball and represents a cheap stream to possibly replace someone like Addison Barger. He faces five righties next week in six games and he goes to Houston next weekend where his lift and pull can play very well. BID – 1-2%
SS – NYY – Anthony Volpe (59%) – He is beginning a rehab assignment and now is the time to scoop him up, especially if you’ve been relying on Jose Caballero. He has a power and speed potential (19/18 last year) and is about to just 25. BID – 5-10%
OF – SEA – Dominic Canzone (57%) – He can be a solid Brent Rooker/George Springer replacement. The average isn’t great but he is slugging .483 and he has continued to improve his K% which is now at 18.8%. He has a 13.0% barrel rate and 52.2% hard-hit rate. He gets six straight RHP next week per FanGraph’s probable’s grid. Could have enough per game value to be an ROS add. BID – 2-4%
P – MIN – Mick Abel (57%) – there were some panic drops and he turned in a nice outing last time out. He gets a chance to take advantage of a struggling Red Sox (87 wRC+) offense next week. He earned 14 whiffs in a solid six innings against the Tigers last time out.
P – ATL – Didier Fuentes (56%) – Could be a cheap flyer. There are conflicting reports on if the Braves are bringing him up this week. But he will be on the Braves at some point and he has tons of K-upside. BID – 3-5%
P – SFG – Tyler Mahle (54%) – He had solid outing last time out vs. the Phils and now he gets an April game in CIncy (it won’t be super hot which makes GABP a hitters haven). But he is just a streamer level arm. BID 2-3%
OF – LAA – Jorge Soler (54%) – He has four homers already and he continues to have a double-digit barrel rate. If you’re looking for a Rooker replacement, he shouldn’t be too expensive. BID – 2-4%
P – WSN – Clayton Beeter (51%) – he has swing and miss stuff but he is likely the closer for the Nats… so not too much FAAB. 2-4%
Now the dudes that are under 50%
3B – TEX – Josh Jung (49%)
It’s been a struggle but I’m encouraged by his hit tool improvements in the early going. He has a career-high 81.5% contact rate and a 91.3% in-zone contact rate as he still has a 48% hard-hit rate. He is going to be really cheap and has top-12 3B upside. BID -2-3%
P – HOU – Bryan King (41%)
Bryan Abreu walked the bases loaded and coughed it up in tie game in the ninth. That leash has to be getting shorter and King is the most logical next option. BID – 3-6%, more if you need saves.
1B, OF – MIL – Jake Bauers (45%)
He has always had good quality of contact numbers and now he is getting run with injuries in Milwaukee. He also gets all rigthy starters next week, but one, per Fangraphs. Another good replacement for Rooker/Springer. BID – 4-10%
