12-Team Points Dynasty Startup Mock Draft Review

  • Engaging alongside the rest of the fantasy community and learning as a result is all part of the process. I was recently fortunate enough to participate in a CBS 12-team dynasty startup points draft hosted by Scott White (CBS Fantasy Baseball Today) that also featured other analysts and writers from around the industry.

I had the 9th overall pick in this one, a pretty flexible spot throughout the draft. Able to grab depth with my first two picks and never too far out of striking distance to get in on a positional run, the middle or back part of the draft is one I will never complain about drafting from.

    Early Investments in High-Upside Talent

My first-round selection of Jackson Chourio (OF, MIL) was aggressive, given his relative inexperience at the major league level. However, in dynasty formats, betting on a generational talent who possesses a combination of power, speed, and hit tool can pay dividends. Chourio’s .282/.338/.467 slash line in Double-A as a teenager showcased his ability to handle advanced pitching, and with his blend of tools, he could be a fantasy superstar in a points league that rewards total bases and efficiency at the plate.

I doubled down on upside with my second pick, James Wood (OF, WAS), another elite power-speed prospect with significant long-term appeal. Wood showed impressive plate discipline in 2023, posting a .375 OBP across two minor league levels. He has legitimate 30-homer, 15-steal potential, which should translate well in a points format.
