Pickups of the Day for July 27th

  • It can be hard to find names on the waiver wire this time of year as most of the solidly valued dudes are probably already on rosters. But that does not mean the grind does not quit. That also does not mean that managers don’t make some odd decisions that you need to take advantage of. This is also trade season so that means we got guys who might have more opportunity to produce.

Today, I’ve got a player who managers are for some reason dropping ahead of their return from the IL, a player who is starting to take off and is going to play more as a result of a recent trade, and another who is a youngster taking off since he got his shot about a month ago.

    Jose Miranda – 1B, 3B – MIN – 61% Yahoo

I really do try and avoid players as heavily rostered as Miranda. I really do. However, I broke my rule today.

    Why?

His rostership has actually gone down recently and that just does not make any sense.

Y’all do know he is coming off the injured list, right?

Y’all do know he is batting .326 with nine homers, 43 RBI and an .883 OPS in 76 games played?

From June 26 to July 10 (last game played before going on IL), he played everyday, but one, getting time at first, third and designated hitter. The Twins really showed they wanted this bat in their lineup and there is little reason to suspect that to change. His bat is just too good to keep on the bench in real life and in fantasy.

His xwOBA is .345, the xBA is .287 and the xSLG is .464. The avgEV, Barrel and hard hit rates are all right along league average. While that is a bit underwhelming, you got to love the launch-angle/sweet-spot of 36.7 which will amplify those more middling quality of contact numbers. Managers can be confident that Miranda is a solid source of power and run production while the batting average gives him a  very good floor. He needs to be on virtually every roster, except in the shallowest of formats.

    League size recommendation: 10-team leagues
