There was some movement on the closer front this week.
We have yet another potential closer in Texas. Tanner Scott is back in LA. There was some interesting usage in Tampa as well as in Baltimore. Who benefits from Jason Adam’s injury in San Diego and the injury to Shelby Miller in Arizona? The closer situation in Arizona also looks to be fluid. Then we still have some fluidity in the Bronx.
As always, the holds landscape is always changing.
I dive into all 30 teams and tell you how to evaluate them.
The closers I will label in the following tiers (I’ve added a fourth tier from last year and modified my definition of ‘weak’*)
Strong – they are definitely the closer.
Probably – they look to be the closer, for now.
Weak – there is a good chance they don’t get the next save chance*
Committee – We just don’t know who will get the ball in the ninth. Shrug.Alright, let’s get into it!
EDITOR’S NOTE – Tuesday and Wednesday updates are provided when necessary.
Phillies
Closer – Jhoan Duran – Strong
Duran got three saves this last week.
He is the dude.
Holds
David Robertson and Matt Strahm each earned three holds this week.
I said last week Roberton was getting close to ‘must-roster’ territory and now, I think we can call him that.
He now leads the team in holds with seven in his last 14 appearances with a 2.84 ERA, 18 Ks, and five BBs in 12.2 innings.
Strahm is also must roster at six holds in this time with a 0.79 ERA, 13 Ks and four BBs in 11.1 innings.
Orion Kerkering is now just a deep league play.
