We got some committees, performance concerns and a arms coming off the injured list that are/could be changing the saves landscape.
Did Camilo Doval fight off Randy Rodriguez? Tanner Scott is getting better but not all the saves. A Ryan Pressly ninth-inning sighting? Is there a committee now in Philly? Will Luke Weaver get his job back when he returns? Just how good has Josh Hader been? Is there a clue as to who will get the next save chance in Atlanta?
And then you have the ever changing holds landscape.
I’ve got your answers in my latest installment of Paul’s Call to the ‘Pen!
The closer’s I will label in the following tiers (I’ve added a fourth tier from last year and modified my definition of ‘weak’*)
Strong – they are definitely the closer.
Probably – they look to be the closer, for now.
Weak – there is a good chance they don’t get the next save chance*
Committee – We just don’t know who will get the ball in the ninth. Shrug.Alright, let’s get into it!
NOTE; All stats are for games played through June 17. .
Diamondbacks
Closer – Shelby Miller – Strong
Miller and Bryce Jarvis each got a save over the last seven days.
Jarvis’ was a volume save so ignore it.
Miller locked down the closer’s role the last time the D’backs lost Justin Martinez. Now that he is out for all of this year and most (if not all) of next year, consider Miller a must-add in all saves leagues.
Holds
Tyler Scott, Jalen Beeks and Juan Morillo each got a hold.
Scott came over from Houston and didn’t produce enough holds there to be relevant. Same will be true in Arizona.
Beeks and Ryan Thompson are the two arms that stand to benefit from a holds perspective with Miller moving into the closer’s role. They both have sub-2.00 ERA’s over the last 30 days and have high-leverage experience.
Keep an eye on Kevin Ginkel.
