According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the NBA is currently exploring multiple scenarios as far as the start of the 2020-21 season is concerned, including one that would begin the season on Christmas Day.

As of now, everything is pretty much up in the air. Sports leagues are playing things by ear, adjusting to the fluid situation brought about by the Coronavirus pandemic. The Christmas Day start is just one of several scenarios that the NBA is considering. If the timing is right and things do fall into place, we could see 2020-21 tip off before 2020 actually ends. Do note that the news has been more centered on 2020-21 as opposed to explorations on the assumption of the 2019-20 season, lending more credence to the thinking that the current season will end in an unresolved "no contest."
