Ja MorantPG, Memphis GrizzliesAlong with details regarding the release of the 2020-21 season schedule, the NBA Board of Governors announced that there will be play-in games to decide the 7th and 8th playoff seeds in each conference.
It will be a mini tournament between the 7-10th seeds in each conference, after the season and prior to the playoffs. Here is the breakdown of how the tournament will play out. No. 7 plays No. 8, the winner is the 7th seed. No. 9 plays No. 10, the loser is out. The winner plays No. 8 for 8th seed in playoffs. Last season's tiebreaker between the Blazers and the Grizzlies for the final playoff slot was a doozy and the NBA will attempt to capitalize – financially – on the potential of play-in games. If nothing else, it adds a bit of spice to the playoff landscape.
