The first Saturday of August means two things: the MLB trade deadline has passed and we’re about 4 weeks away from the fantasy baseball playoffs kicking off. So let’s take a look at the waiver wire and see if we can find some help for our teams.

Curtis Mead (5%, Yahoo)

Just called up yesterday, Mead is a priority add in most leagues 14 teams or deeper. He is one of the more polished MiLB bats. Has some pop in the bat (probably a 20ish homer guy), has a very solid K:BB (32:28), has a high floor batting average (.280 or higher) and will be platooned in Tampa. I know, one of those things is not like the others, but, in regards to his playing time, reference this tweet:

Cash said Mead won’t play everyday for #Rays, but will start vs. LHP, come off the bench vs. LH relievers, make occasional starts vs. RHPs. Will only start 3B or DH, could do some work at 2B

Mead is worth rostering and playing the start/sit game in daily leagues and starting in weekly leagues where the Rays face multiple left handed starters.
