Happy last Saturday of August everyone! Fantasy playoffs are right around the corner, with most leagues starting theirs in one week, so let’s dive into the waiver wire and see who might be available as we strive to become league champions.
Yainer Diaz, C/1B, HOU (57% Rostered, Yahoo)
Coming into the 2023 season, Diaz was locked into the starting catching spot, but no one really knew what to expect from him. He possesses a solid hit tool and some decent power, but his defense behind the plate leaves a lot to be desired. All he had to do to stand out for Astros fans (and fantast managers) was outhit Martin Maldonado so he could get the bulk of the at bats in a potent offense, and outhit Maldonado he has. After starting the year cold (an OPS south of .700 for April+May), Diaz has an OPS of .854 of higher in June, July and August. And, currently, in the month of August, Diaz is on a heater. Since we’ve entered the hottest month of the year, Diaz has preceded to swing the bat to the tune of a .319 batting average, a .917 OPS with 9 runs, 5 homers and 15 RBI. He’s been the 7th best catcher this month (and 2nd best since the start of June) and is getting nearly everyday at bats playing some combination of C, 1B or DH. He should be universally owned, instead of available in just over 40% of Yahoo leagues.
