Fantasy Recap: Week 5 Early Slate 2

  • Seahawks 32, Saints 39 (Saints covered -5.5, O35.5)

    Key Postgame Storylines

Just as we all predicted, Geno Smith looked amazing again while Taysom Hill scored four touchdowns (three rushing and one passing). In all seriousness, we were treated with an excellent game far surpassing the over under total of 35.5. We had massive fantasy performances all around, with D.K. Metcalf producing five receptions for 88 yards and a score while Tyler Lockett contributed five catches for 102 and two scores himself. Geno is producing at the level we anticipated from Russel Wilson and then some. Rashaad Penny got off to a hot start before he was injured and ruled out after just eight carries for 54 yards, allowing rookie RB Kenneth Walker III to handle eight carries of his own for 88 yards, including a 69 yard touchdown run. With Penny now out for the season, Walker will be one of the hot topics of the waiver wire ahead of Week 6.

For the Saints, the defense got picked apart by Geno all afternoon, but it was Taysom Hill who couldn’t be stopped. Hill had nine carries for 112 yards and three touchdowns, adding a 22-yard touchdown pass to TE Adam Trautman. It’s hard to recommend Hill for fantasy purposes moving forward due to his inconsistent role in the offense, but if you need serious upside in a matchup you’re projected to lose, taking a shot on Hill may be worthwhile. Kamara had a productive day himself, earning 102 yards on 23 carries, adding six receptions for 91 yards with a fumble. Chris Olave was having a nice day as well, hauling in four catches for 54 yards and a touchdown before getting concussed and ruled out for the game.

    Top Performers

QB Taysom Hill: Hill scorched the Saints defense, making fantasy managers very pleased for inserting him into lineups. Games like this won’t happen often, and when we chase these kinds of games the following week, we are usually met with disappointment. Taking your shot on Hill going forward will be frustrating with how inconsistent his usage is.

Geno Smith: Geno was fantastic, making throws that most quarterbacks could never make as he threw into tight windows in a way that looked effortless. He had 268 passing yards on 16 of 25 with three touchdowns. At this point with the way the offense is working, Geno should be rostered and started in all superflex formats while being a serious consideration in single QB leagues as well regardless of matchup.

D.K. Metcalf/Tyler Lockett: Metcalf and Lockett looked fantastic as they caused trouble for the Saints secondary while Geno constantly set them up for success down the field. Both receivers are locks as WR2s in lineups with WR1 potential any given week until further notice.

Alvin Kamara: This was Kamara’s highest touch count of the season and he remains a no-brainer RB1 for fantasy. Weird Taysom Hill games will happen, but it will be more of a rarity and we should expect Kamara to find the endzone himself sooner rather than later.

Kenneth Walker III: Walker was inserted after what ended up being a season-ending injury to Rashaad Penny. He was solid and had an amazing run resulting in a 69-yard touchdown. DeeJay Dallas got in for just one carry so we should assume Walker will get all the touches he can handle moving forward.

    Biggest Busts

Saints DST: The New Orleans DST has been mostly disappointing this season, after being hyped as one of the leagues top units. They can generate pressure, but with how many points they surrender, they are better suited on your waiver wire than in lineups. There are much better options out there.

Andy Dalton: With so many big performances, it’s a shame Dalton didn’t have a bigger stat line, especially after what happened to Seattle against Detroit by the hands of Jared Goff last week. Dalton completed 16 of 24 for 187 yards and a touchdown with one interception. We expected a bit more in this matchup from Dalton and with Jameis Winston potentially back next week combined with Taysom Hill’s usage, Dalton can be left on waivers or dropped.
