Karl-Anthony Towns

As of today, we’ve got a six game sample size of Karl-Anthony Towns playing as a Knick without Jalen Brunson. He’s averaging 25.5/11/3.2 on 53/52/86 shooting splits and rocking with a 30% usage rate, but is only averaging 33.1 mpg, a surprising number for the star on a Tom Thibodeau led team. With Brunson, Towns was averaging 24.1/13.3/3.1 on 53/42/83 shooting splits, while playing 35.2 mpg and rocking with a 26.7% usage. With a 3.3% of added usage, the key to unlock KAT without Brunson resides on his lower minutes vs. the Kings, the GSW and Miami, that bring his average down. And why did he play less? Against the Kings, the Knicks won by 29. Against the GSW, KAT fouled out. The worry comes in a game like Miami, the Knicks last game, where KAT played 31 minutes to Mitchell Robinson’s 24, his highest minute total of the season. Well, Robinson is questionable and the Spurs matchup could very well end up like the Kings game, as the Knicks are heavily favoured. But these are minor concerns when evaluating KAT today, as his extra usage and added ofensive responsibilty will come against a team that is struggling mightily on defense. The Spurs have the worst defensive rating and 2nd worst reb% over the last 15 games, while also allowing the 2nd most points, 7th most rebounds and 2nd best fg% to opposing Cs over the same span. Today, Towns pairs a great matchup, added usage and a red-hot 55% 3pt% over the last four games! Still in New York (or in San Antonio, as this is an away game), Miles McBride ($5,600) continues to be interesting as long as Brunson is out. He’s put up 20+ fpts in each of his last five games, all without the superstar PG, and has three 30+ performances mixed in there. Besides the putrid team defensive stats, the Spurs are also allowing the 4th most assists and 4th best fg% to opposing PGs over the last 15 games!
