Spring is here and it is one of my favorite times of the year.
I live in a 4-season state and I’m enjoying longer days and warmer ones at that. As a college hoops fan, this year’s Final Four is surprising but certainly not disappointing and for the aficionados of the gridiron, the football draft is coming and with it hope and frustration depending on how your team’s picks fall. I also can’t forget that the NHL and NBA playoffs are rounding into shape. There’s a lot going on in the sports world, even still, even with all that, I enjoy baseball’s opening day more than any of the above.
It all starts Thursday. The wait ‘til next year is here. Hope springs eternal.
Come this weekend, I’ll be able to review box scores that count. If Aaron Judge goes yard before next Monday, then he’ll only be 49 more away from reaching 50, or only 59 away from 60, or…well, you get the point. If Spenser Strider fans 10 in five innings, or Bobby Witt Jr. steals three bases, well, those all count. After Wednesday, the games matter for the record books, not just for our personal pride.
And speaking of record books, this is the time a lot of folks like to double down on who they feel will take home post-season hardware come November. And even though there isn’t any particular award associated with some of the things we fantasy managers talk about, we still want to know who will be this year’s JRod, or Hunter Greene/Nick Lodolo (dynamic rookie pitching duo), or Jackson Chourio. Stated more clearly, which rookie hitter will perform like an established All-Star level veteran, which team will boast not one, but two great rookie pitchers, and which prospect that you might not ever have heard of will zoom to the top-10 on prospect lists. Who indeed!
