Welcome to the inaugural SportsEthos NFL weather report! Each week, we’ll check out the weather forecast for each NFL game (just the outdoor ones, of course!). We will look for weather conditions that may help – or hinder – your fantasy players. We’ll also highlight games where weather forecasts may help us with Over/Under betting decisions.
So, what weather conditions are important and how do they impact fantasy performance? Here are some general rules on how different kinds of weather generally impact each position skill position:
- 1) QBs aren’t significantly impacted by winds until the breezes reach 20 mph or higher.
- 2) The impact of wind speeds on WRs/TEs is similar to that of QBs (don’t worry much until winds are near or greater than 20 mph)
- 3) Impacts are reversed for RBs. They tend to score slightly more points when winds increase to 20 mph or greater.
- 4) Light rain and light snow don’t have much impact on scoring for QBs, WR/TEs or RBs.
- 5) Heavy precipitation (especially if combined with very gusty winds) tends to reduce scoring for QBs and WR/TEs… but increase scoring for RBs.
With those rules in mind, you should usually expect small impacts from weather during the first part of the NFL season with greater impacts to more players as winter approaches and weather conditions become more extreme. Week 1 fits this trend as the weather looks tranquil for most games as shown below:
