Key Storylines

The Magic ended January with wins in their final two games but overall had a disappointing month, ending with a 7-10 record for the month. They are currently eighth in the Eastern Conference standings but they are only a game behind the sixth seed Pacers and three games behind the fifth seed 76ers who will be losing Joel Embiid for an extended period. Markelle Fultz is getting back into form after returning in early January and has been putting up fifth round 9-cat value over the past two weeks, largely in part due to a very strong steal rate. Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero are both outside of the top-100 over the past two weeks, with Franz’s points per game dipping and Paolo’s continued weakness from the free throw line. If they get things going a bit in either of those respective categories, the Magic may be able to slip out of play-in tournament territory.

Detroit, man. They’re going nowhere yet again this season and it will be interesting to see if they will be involved in any more drastic roster reconstruction moves when the trade deadline comes around next week. Bringing in Danilo Galinari and Mike Muscala has not (and was never expected to) move the needle at all for Detroit. They are one of the worst three-point shooting teams in the league which does not do any favors for floor spacing around Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren. Bojan Bodganovic is a prime trade candidate but the Detroit’s asking price for him has turned off some teams. This season is already wash so they’ve got to decide the direction that they want to move in with an early offseason looming for them. Let’s see if they can make any sort of improvements in their roster, although my confidence is pretty low.

Stream of the Game

There aren’t too many good streaming options on either side but Alec Burks is a name to watch for some threes and points. He is one of the better long distance scorers on the team and Monty Williams relies on him to provide some offensive punch off the bench.
