The 2024 MLB trade deadline has come and gone, with a flurry of trades made in the final hours. From the Dodgers trading for Jack Flaherty to the Royals beefing up their bullpen, teams at all levels of contention made some moves. So, in this edition of risers & fallers, we are going to look at the players that I believe were most impacted, either positively or negatively.
RISERS
No hitter benefitted more from a trade than Jazz Chisholm, Jr. did. Moving from one of the worst lineups in baseball to one of the best and leaving behind a home park that tends to play neutral for left-handed home runs for one that plays up as the third best ballpark for left-handed home runs is a boon. He already has four games with his new team, hitting two home runs in back to back games, playing third base in three games, instead of centerfield. He has moved from the top of the order to the middle with the Yankees, but the rumor is that they want him to lead off, so there will be some speed on base in front of Juan Soto and Aaron Judge. Even if that doesn’t come to fruition and Chisholm, Jr. continues to bat fifth or sixth in the lineup, he can and will still be productive, with Giancarlo Stanton in front of him and Gleyber Torres behind him. He and Anthony Volpe are the only two players on the Yankees roster that have stolen more than five bases, but I think the Yankees will let him run plenty (as evidenced by his steal of third base in Sunday’s game against the Red Sox), which will lead to him being in scoring position quite often. It would not be shocking at all if, from here until the end of the season, Chisholm, Jr. were to hit 10 or more home runs, steal 10 or more bases and have 55 or more combined runs and RBI. The sky is now the limit for the music man and that might be even too low.
