Pickups of the Day for May 24th

  • It’s easier to “teach” raw power than it is to “teach” hitting ability. At least, that’s the axiom when it comes to hitters in baseball. It makes sense if you think about it as young batters are often called upon to produce prior to their physical maturity, limiting their ability to make hard contact. Someone like CJ Abrams fits that description perfectly, being called up to the major leagues at a precocious 21-years-old in 2022 and struggling, knocking just two home runs in 90 games. But as he’s grown into his body, his fence-clearing ability has grown too, following up 2022’s power outage with 18 home runs in 2023 and a 162-game pace of 25 home runs in 2024.

While it can sometimes be a fool’s errand to chase specific player archetypes, perhaps there is more juice to be squeezed here in parsing middle-infielders with a known ability when it comes to their hit tool, but with questions remaining when it comes to their power stroke.

Let’s examine three potential names who could fit that description, as well as a pair of pitchers for deep league managers.
