Pickups of the Day for August 27th

  • We have just under five weeks of the season left and if you are still in contention in your fantasy league, you may be looking for gains in just one or two categories.  You also may have noticed that the waiver wire is rather thin these days in quality options.  At this stage of the season, sometimes you have to pick up players for a single category, or to help you this week, or even for a game or two before cutting them for another player.  The “Season Long” pickup is often not available, so let’s dig a little deeper this week and look at some specific category plays that can help.

    Pete Crow-Armstrong – OF – CHC – 12% Yahoo, 67% FanTrax, 32% CBS

Crow Armstrong has a below average slash line for the season of .220/.271/.383, however his twenty-three stolen bases have made him an option in some deeper category leagues.  Crow Armstrong is considered one of the best defensive outfielders in baseball, and ranks in the 95th percentile in range and 96th percentile in arm strength, which is why the Cubs have been willing to play him.  He started the season in more of a platoon role and struggled through June and July where he hit just .170, but turned things around at the start of August.  Since the beginning of August, Crow Armstrong has a slash line of .284/.343/.582, while playing a near full time role.  He also has four home runs and six steals this month.  While I don’t look to him for much power, his 99th percentile sprint speed makes him an excellent source of steals, which are very hard to find with five weeks left in the season.  With Patrick Wisdom and Mike Tauchman as his main competition, I don’t see Crow Armstrong losing playing time down the stretch as his defense will keep him in the lineup and his speed will help your fantasy team.

League size recommendation: Category leagues only, 12 teams or deeper
