A chill Friday by NBA standards gave everyone some time to dive into the five games on tap. Unfortunately, only a couple were meaningful. The Heat were missing some regulars and despite the first career start for Kasparas Jakucionis, there isn’t a ton of weight in those results. The Hawks got absolutely shredded by Wemby and the Spurs. The Cavs lost again and didn’t have Donovan Mitchell, so while Tyrese Proctor played well with 16 points in a rare start, it’s not an illuminating batch of results. The one real takeaway is that Darius Garland finally got going, dropping 30-plus points with a handful of triples. Something has been missing all year for Cleveland, and maybe it’s Garland.
The Sixers and Knicks gave us a good game as VJ Edgecombe shined at The Garden while Mitchell Robinson delivered his best game in a very long time. The real main event was the scheduled main event, however, as the Wolves and Thunder put on a show. Minnesota sent OKC packing for their second loss in three games, ending the contest on an 8-0 run fueled by Anthony Edwards. He knocked down a crazy step-back triple and then picked up a block, a rebound and a steal to help close the game out. Superstar work from a player who is slowly but surely marching towards first-round value in fantasy.
Let’s see what Saturday holds.
Top Pickups
This is the “general must-add” section regardless of the slate. If these players are being overlooked and remain chilling on the waiver wire, consider adding them to your squad.
Mitchell Robinson (7%)
Robinson looks to be rounding into form and is a legitimate weapon for the Knicks when he’s at his best. Other teams just can’t keep him off the glass, and if Robinson is hitting his free throws there’s no real way to get him out of the picture. It was all clicking on Friday with 21 points (7-of-8 FG, 7-of-8 FT), 16 rebounds, a steal and two blocks in only 26 minutes of work. That’s clearly on the high end of what Robinson provides and he’s a non-option if you care at all about FT%, but he is the best rebounding specialist around and has upside to contribute in other categories when he’s feeling it.
Tre Jones (19%)
