You would think that Luka Doncic missing the rest of the regular season with a hamstring strain that will sideline him indefinitely would be the top story from Friday, but you would be wrong.
Instead, all eyes are somehow back on Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks.
The league is investigating the situation, as Giannis believes he is healthy enough to play and that the Bucks are just holding him out to tank. The Bucks, meanwhile, are treading cautiously with a player who has dealt with four serious injuries this season, and who remains the linchpin of their future one way or another. The team gains nothing from having Antetokounmpo play again — if they want to keep him, his health is top priority, and if they want to trade him, well, his health is top priority.
This comes a couple weeks after it was reported that Antetokounmpo rebuffed Milwaukee’s suggestion that he be shut down for the season, and whether that was a standalone event or just someone planting the seeds for yesterday’s development will be revealed in time.
While Giannis seemed happy to stay with Milwaukee past the trade deadline, it does feel like a divorce is inevitable. With Antetokounmpo openly questioning where the relationship between player and franchise goes from here — he’s offended by the notion of not playing — things are begging for a change. The court of public opinion is shifting pretty wildly here as it looks like Antetokounmpo is trying to stack instances where the team does him wrong, but it all feels self-serving. If he wants out of Milwaukee, he should just say as much. The Bucks have done a whole lot of what he has asked over the years, and playing these political games makes him look like “the bad guy” far more than a basic trade request ever could. It has been a nightmare season for the Bucks and they’ve managed to sneak in one more chapter of drama before the buzzer.
Top Pickups
This is the “general must-add” section regardless of the slate. If these players are being overlooked and remain chilling on the waiver wire, consider adding them to your squad.
Collin Sexton (29%)
Sexton managed to escape perhaps the ugliest game on the slate with 19 points (6-of-12 FG, 2-of-2 FT), two rebounds, one assist, a steal and five 3-pointers in 29 minutes against the Knicks. He is putting up plenty of points lately and should end up getting more than his fair share of minutes between the Bulls getting blown out and the potential for Josh Giddey and/or Tre Jones to miss games.
Cody Williams (18%)
