Catcher isn’t the barren wasteland that it used to be, but it’s also not as deep as, say, shortstop or third base. It’s also a fairly young position, with seven of the ten best catchers 30 years old or younger (and only six of the top 25 are over the age of 30). Only one catcher topped thirty home runs last season (Cal Raleigh, with 34) and just six others hit 20 or more (William Contreras, Shea Langeliers, Salvador Perez, Ryan Jeffers, Will Smith and Logan O’Hoppe). On top of these productive “youngsters”, there are more than a handful of very talented catchers coming up through the minor leagues, including top prospects like Samual Basallo, Dalton Rushing and Kyle Teel, among others.
