The first baseman are getting old. Of the top 10, only two are younger than 27 and only four total are younger than 30. There is still plenty of power upside at first base, but the bulk of the heavy hitters are entering their middle-30’s and later, making it more difficult to justify an early draft pick at the position. Only four first basemen hit 30 or more home runs, with Pete Alonso’s 34 the lowest total to lead the position since 2015 (Paul Goldschmidt led all first basemen with 33 that season). Help is on the way though, with a handful of prodigious power hitters at the position navigating their way through the minor leagues, but they will just serve to replace the once-studs as they age out of their premiere spots at the position.
