2025 Washington Commanders Team Preview 25-26

  • Everything went right for the 2024 Washington Commanders. They put the league on notice and defied any expectations their fans, the media, and fantasy owners had of them. After an abysmal 2023 season, the team nearly went from worst to first in the NFC East. In 2023, they finished 4-13, but in 2024 they almost flipped their record and went 12-5, finishing second in the division and earning a wild card spot. The team accomplished these feats with a new coaching staff, a home-run draft pick at quarterback, and some big-name free agents.

Head coach Dan Quinn stepped back into a position he had not held since 2020. The long-time defensive genius was met with question marks about his ability to lead a team with this many roster holes. The franchise responded to the trepidation by having a stellar off-season. They drafted QB Jayden Daniels with the second-overall pick in the draft and cornerback Mike Sainristil in the second round. Both players had an immediate impact to say the least.

In free agency, the Commanders signed future Hall of Fame linebacker Bobby Wagner, veteran linebacker Frankie Luvu, and Super Bowl champion tight end Zach Ertz. Several other veterans were added to the roster and rounded out a significantly better roster than the year before. This combination of veteran leadership, high-quality performance, and championship pedigree propelled this team throughout the season. While they fell short of their Super Bowl aspirations, they made an NFC Championship Game. No one could have foreseen a season as good as that from a team that was a cellar dweller the last few years.

In 2025, the team is running it back, but with a few roster upgrades. They traded for San Francisco 49ers star receiver Deebo Samuel, who is looking to rebound following a down year last year. His dual-threat receiving and rushing ability make him a dangerous weapon for Daniels to utilize. In a move to add more protection for Daniels, they also traded for Houston Texans star left tackle Laremy Tunsil. He made the Pro Bowl in five of the last six seasons and is one of the best offensive linemen in the game. Those two moves alone could propel Washington to the top of the NFC East this year and upset the reigning Super Bowl champions.
