New York Giants Team Preview 25-26

  • Finishing last place in the NFC East is a feeling the Giants have known well over the last eight seasons. Last year, the team finished with a 3-14 record, their worst since 1974. Head coach Brian Daboll is on the hot seat, especially since his win total has been cut down significantly in the last two seasons. His tenure was off to a promising start when he took an unlikely Giants squad to the playoffs off the back of a 9-7-1 record and earned a playoff win in 2022. NFL Coach of the Year honors soon followed and the franchise seemed as though they were finally heading in the right direction.

However, the next two seasons were riddled with misfortune. The play of then-starting QB Daniel Jones deteriorated in 2023 and the team finished with a record of 6-11. Star running back Saquon Barkley left in the offseason to the rival Philadelphia Eagles. The team would have to replace his production with relatively unknown players in 2024 and figure out a solution to Jones’s ineffectiveness. They only tackled half of that problem.

Last season, they got significant contributions from first-year stars Malik Nabers and Tyrone Tracy Jr., but still finished with only three wins. Nabers finished his season with 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns while setting multiple team and NFL rookie records in the process. He was WR6 in fantasy, which is amazing when taking into account the fact that he caught passes from a handful of backup quarterbacks. Tracy Jr., on the other hand, had a good rookie season behind a bad offensive line. He finished with over 1,100 combined yards, 839 rushing and 284 receiving, five rushing touchdowns and a receiving touchdown. He lost two fumbles in the process, but still finished as RB26 behind one of the worst offensive lines in the league.

This year, the Giants made significant additions through the draft. In the first round, they drafted outside linebacker Abdul Carter and Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart. Carter was seen as one of the top-three players and best pass rusher in this draft class. Dart was considered the second-best QB in the class behind current Titans QB Cam Ward. The last time the Giants drafted a QB out of Ole Miss in the first round was Eli Manning, and that worked out pretty well for both parties. He will be mentored by veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, who are both trying to make an impact of their own this late in their careers.

The successful draft did not stop there for the G-men. They drafted Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo in the fourth round, placing him on the precipice of earning the starting job in the Giants backfield. Skattebo was a First-team All-American and First-team All-Big 12 member last season. He accumulated 1,711 rushing yards, 21 rushing touchdowns, 605 receiving yards, and three receiving touchdowns. It will be interesting to see what he does in his rookie year, given the competition with Tracy Jr. and the offensive line not being solidified.
