This is a special trade deadline edition of the Call to the ‘Pen!
I break down which arms you need to stash ahead of the deadline based on the likelihood they get traded. Or which arms could lose their role when their teams make additions.
On top of that, I deliver the goods on which arms are trending up, trending down and which ones to add or drop based on that assessment.
And I break down the recent trades of Seranthony Dominguez, Gregory Soto and Tyler Kinley.
The closers I will label in the following tiers (I’ve added a fourth tier from last year and modified my definition of ‘weak’*)
Strong – they are definitely the closer.
Probably – they look to be the closer, for now.
Weak – there is a good chance they don’t get the next save chance*
Committee – We just don’t know who will get the ball in the ninth. Shrug.Alright, let’s get into it!
Mets
Closer – Edwin Diaz – Strong
Diaz got three saves with Ryne Stanek getting one.
This is the second time Stanek has gotten the save with workload concerns giving Diaz a night off..
There is no chance the Mets bring in a closer to challenge Diaz.
Holds
Reed Garrett got three holds, Brooks Raley got two with Stanek, Gregory Soto and Rico Garcia each getting one hold.
Garrett is back on track with four holds over his last two weeks with seven Ks in 4.1 innings. But he has been plagued by inconsistency. Stanek also has been inconsistent as the Mets brought in Soto.
He gives the Mets a legit lefty for high-leverage spots as he should be a ‘must-roster’ dude for holds.
Garrett and Stanek are decent, yet risky, plays.
However, the Mets will surely add on to this ‘pen before the deadline so their value in holds leagues could be jeopardy.
