What a week of total carnage at the quarterback position in the NFL. Last week, we lost Joe Burrow, Justin Fields and J.J. McCarthy to injury, to add to the change that already took place in San Francisco. Additionally, Daniel Jones has been a top five QB this year.
Let’s go through the rankings for Week 3 in an effort to sift through this chaos.
Rank Player Team Opponent Notes 1 Lamar Jackson BAL DET Jackson overtakes Allen as he’s both outscoring him and in a more competitive matchup that will cause him to push throughout 2 Josh Allen BUF MIA Allen owns the Dolphins, but the Bills dominated the Jets last week and he didn’t need to score big in fantasy. 3 Dak Prescott DAL CHI The Bears defense has been horrid, and Dak has been ripping it. He’s an incredible matchup start this week. 4 Jalen Hurts PHI LAR Tougher matchup this week, and he won’t throw downfield. Moderately concerned here, but the inevitable tush push TDs should keep him afloat. 5 Patrick Mahomes KC NYG Giants got lit up last week, and Mahomes has been taking matters into his own hands more. Great spot for him. 6 Baker Mayfield TB NYJ Mayfield has looked great and the Jets’ defense has decidedly not. He should carve them up. 7 Justin Herbert LAC DEN Would not have felt good about this a week ago, but Denver struggled against Daniel Jones, and Herbert continues to play very well. 8 Caleb Williams CHI DAL Williams makes me nervous, but the Dallas defense does not. This is the highest total of the week by far and should be exploited as such. 9 Drake Maye NE PIT I’m not quite there with Maye as a weekly starter yet, but this Pittsburgh defense has really struggled, so I’d plug him in again. 10 Kyler Murray ARI SF Solid start to the season for Murray, but you’d like to see some higher highs against the soft matchups he’s seen. 11 Jayden Daniels WAS LVR I’m concerned about the injury for Daniels, but if he’s in, you still have to play him. 12 Jordan Love GB CLE Love has pushed into the back half of the QB1s with a solid start to 2025. His pass volume could be frustrating against the Browns, though. 13 Daniel Jones IND TEN Ranking Jones this high feels nuts, but he’s done nothing but deliver so far this year, and he’s definitely a worthwhile play in exploitable matchups now. 14 Jared Goff DET BAL Goff is much worse away from Detroit, but it’s not clear how tough this Baltimore D really is this year. There’s a ton of upside if the Detroit offense gets going. 15 Bo Nix DEN LAC Have to give Nix some credit for his typical baseline production, but this Chargers D has looked quite stiff through two weeks, so I’d avoid him. 16 Michael Penix ATL CAR Penix has had a strong start to the season and draws the Panthers in Week 3. He’s creeping into QB1 territory for me. 17 C.J. Stroud HOU JAC It’s been another slow start for Stroud, but this matchup should be reasonably exploitable if you need a deep streamer. 18 Trevor Lawrence JAC HOU Hard to trust Lawrence so far this year, especially in this matchup. He can’t consistently find his top two weapons yet. 19 Matthew Stafford LAR PHI So much for the back issues. Stafford has looked electric passing the ball, and while Philly probably isn’t the right matchup, he belongs in the tier below the QB1s. 20 Sam Darnold SEA NO Darnold sustained much higher volume in Week 2, and Seattle will definitely score on New Orleans. Darnold still feels off the radar. 21 Geno Smith LVR WAS Really tough MNF game for Smith, but he has stinkers occassionally. Still think he’s a solid QB2. 22 Mac Jones SF ARI Another Jones I can’t believe I’m ranking so high, but Mac was remarkably solid against the Saints. 23 Russell Wilson NYG KC Wilson was incredible against Dallas, but this is a much tougher matchup for him. He may eventually be able to break into the tier above. 24 Aaron Rodgers PIT NE Rodgers continues to make big throws, but his upside is just lacking in this offense. 25 Cam Ward TEN IND Ward showed some flashes last week, and this might be a matchup he can exploit after opening his career with two tough ones. 26 Bryce Young CAR ATL Young actually had a good fantasy day while chasing a huge deficit in Week 2, but you simply can’t depend on him week to week. I’m out for now. 27 Tua Tagovailoa MIA BUF Just an awful start to the year for Tua, and this is the nightmare Dolphins game on short rest. No chance I’d play him. 28 Jake Browning CIN MIN The first of three new backup QBs this week, Browning at least has a track record of producing with this group, although I hate the Vikings matchup. 29 Joe Flacco CLE GB Flacco has thrown it well, but the Packers D is the matchup I’m most scared of right now for quarterbacks. 30 Tyrod Taylor NYJ TB No shot I’d play Taylor, but credit to him for continuing to get backup reps all these years later. 31 Carson Wentz MIN CIN Wentz could be awful, but Kevin O’Connell can make anything work, so who knows. 32 Spencer Rattler NO SEA Rattler has actually been OK, but he’s facing Seattle, and that defense has been excellent. Maybe he’ll go higher up these rankings next week.
