I am trying something different here. After the trade deadline, we are going to do a 30-team review for fantasy and I’ll discuss rotations as well as the players whose new situations (new because of things changing around them or that player moving elsewhere) impact fantasy.
As for non-trade deadline stuff. A lot of names are players we have been discussing for weeks. I can tell you Moussa Diabate should be on a 12-team roster (and I will again), but that isn’t really a new pickup.
Trade Deadline Review
I was originally going to list all of the ins and outs too, but I think doing a 30-team review is already a bit ambitious and it is going to take a lot of time. Consider this more of a “NBA-wide update” of things to know and monitor.
The Heat. Rockets and Spurs are the only teams that did not make any move ahead of the deadline.
I will have a summary at the end, but I do recommend reading the changes for teams involved in big deals.
I also have the “Weekend Watch” for short-term schedules to monitor and a playoff schedules section at the end.
Atlanta Hawks
Projected Starters:
- Dyson Daniels
- Nickeil Alexander-Walker
- Zaccharie Risacher
- Jalen Johnson
- Onyeka Okongwu
Projected Bench:
- CJ McCollum
- Buddy Hield or Gabe Vincent
- Corey Kispert
- Jonathan Kuminga
- Jock Landale
Rotation Analysis: That doesn’t leave any room for Mo Gueye, who is one of the team’s better defenders, but you would either be taking away spacing to accommodate him and I assume they want a decent look at what Jonathan Kuminga can do. As for Kuminga, I cannot see how he gets enough minutes for this to week. I guess you’d have to say he gets like 26-29 mpg off the bench eating into Risacher’s minutes. I do not think Kuminga starting alongside Johnson works for both players, so that would only have them interacting together on the court for like 15 or so MPG if Kuminga gets sixth-man minutes. Another issue is that McCollum is already getting sixth-man minutes. So are the Hawks just not going to play their spacers? If you don’t play Hield or Vincent to allow Gueye to get minutes, the spacing on the roster is bad and that isn’t ideal for Johnson as a downhill guy.
Fantasy Impact: Daniels and NAW should remain must-roster.
Kuminga: I do not see the path to enough minutes or touches for 12-team value. For me, he is more of a 14-team or 16-team gamble.
McCollum: He is a 12-team option for now, but I don’t know if Kuminga will siphon away touches and reduce his shot volume. If he does, that would be bad for McCollum. He is a hold, but monitor the role.
Landale: Likely around a 16-team option when Okongwu plays. They can play together in theory, but then the Hawks would not be “getting their look at Kuminga” eniygh. Landale should be a 12-team streamer when Okongwu is out.
Hield: He has been bad this season, but has more of a chance to be maybe a 16-to-18-team option if he plays over Vincent. Vincent is the better defender, but he is worse for fantasy. I wouldn’t be enticed by either player right now.
Kispert: Likely around a 16-team player who can average close to two triples a game and close to 10 PPG.
Boston Celtics
Projected Starters:
- Derrick White
- Baylor Scheierman*
- Jaylen Brown
- Sam Hauser
- Nikola Vucevic*
Projected Bench:
- Payton Pritchard
- Jordan Walsh
- Hugo Gonzalez
- Luka Garza*
- Neemias Queta*
Rotation Analysis: I will open with this: I don’t think it is a 100% guarantee that Vucevic starts over Queta. Vucevic is the better offensive player (and fills up the box score as a result), but Queta is better for the defense. I will also say, Vuc doesn’t strike me as more thanย 28-29 MPG starter on this team and it could even be a 26-22 or 24-24 split between him and Queta. Even worse if it’s a three-center alignment with Luka Garza getting 10-12 MPG or if the Celtics dedicate 10-12 MPG to small-ball lineups.
I would not worry about Pritchard coming off the bench. I think it might be better for his usage and he will still get over 30 MPG. This move makes sense with Anfernee Simons gone, ensuring they have someone to run the second unit while Pritchard will also get minutes with the starters. Scheierman might still play low 20s to mid-20s in minutes despite starting.
The Celtics are also seemingly experimenting with the two-big lineups now and that will be interesting for Queta, Garza and Vucevic (and it would be bad for Scheierman if it sticks).
Fantasy Impact:
Vucevic: His outlook gets worse in Boston in my opinion but he should easily be a hold. He is a sell if managers think his outlook gets better in Boston somehow.
Scheierman: His production is inconsistent, but he could be an option for around 14- and 16-team leagues if you need points, threes, low-end assists and maybe a chance of some rebounds.
Queta: Likely a 12-team drop, but if he can maintain 24 MPG his per-minute upside would be enough to be a late-round 12-team option in the top-125 range or so as a specialist for big-man stats. So no, I don’t think he is an auto-drop. Wait and assess if you can.
Hauser: I don’t think much has changed, but as a general note I think Hauser is a player you roster when he is hot, but stream during his usual periods. He was hot recently and I think he has slipped back down into the “normal zone,” making him more of a streamer.
