It’s the first edition of Buy Low, Sell High of the year and we’ve already got a ton of options to work with.

Early in the season may be the most beneficial time to make trades. Your entire league is still checking in regularly and managers are eager to overreact. The sample sizes are ridiculously small and only a few teams have hit their stride. Things are going to continue to change and it’s a great time to strike — and possibly the easiest. Not every idea you cook up will be met by an eager deal-maker, and some of the results out there are so wildly out of line that nobody will want to make a transaction at all. And that’s okay! But it is a great opportunity to try and secure some long-term wins.

For the uninitiated, buying low refers to the act of acquiring a player at a discount because their recent performance — which is below their standards/expectations — has changed their perceived value for the player’s current manager. Essentially, it’s trying to trade for a player that you know is going to be a lot better than he has been lately, and capitalizing on his current manager’s anxieties to do so at a lower cost than you would normally anticipate.

On the flip side, selling high is the opposite; trading away a player at the height of their perceived value thanks to a recent run of good fortune. That could be the result of several things, but at the end of the day you’re trying to get off at the top and extract more value than you would normally anticipate from your trade partner. It’s a simple concept but hard to do, especially if you’re playing with seasoned competition who know the tricks of the trade.

For our first check in on the buy-lows and sell-highs, you’re going to notice a bit of a common theme: on the low side, it’s largely players acclimating to new situations, whether that’s team or role, and on the high side it is a lot of good shooting. Let’s take a closer look.
